How To Create Good Web Copywriting For Optimal Results

Updated on July 19, 2012

Understanding What Is Considered Web Copywriting

Web copywriting is often mistakenly applied to any text for the web. While the text is written for the web, there is more to its creation. Quality web copy has been shown to affect ranking in search engines.

A basic blog post, or an essay is not considered to be copy for web. While it may be able to rank on a search engine, it is not optimized. Often, this type of writing is more informal and can lack polish.

In order to rank properly, the use of keywords must be added to text. Keyword placement is a very important aspect to creation, however. There should be a primary and several additional keywords or phrases.

Additional key phrases are often related search terms by readers. These often have a ranking system that is similar to the primary. Keywords should be spaced apart to avoid appearing crowded in text.

More Than Just Keywords And Phrases - Targeted Wording

Synonyms may also be used to create more effective web copywriting. This targeted wording can go beyond basic keywords to increase rank. Targeted wording can speak more clearly to readers in a concise way.

Readers need to understand what is being presented to them quickly. For many websites, the average reader needs to be able to skim. This means that content must be easy and fast to process for readers.

One thing to keep in mind with targeted wording is to avoid overuse. Overusing terms can lead to reduced web presence and reader boredom. If readers become bored, they will click away from the site quickly.

A proven way to get readers to stay is to use creative headings. Examples include informing readers what they can learn from text. The body content should back up the headings with interesting text.

Keep Density In Check For Better Rank Results

Some sites may recommend a density between 3-5% for any web copy. This is often too high, and can clutter the article for searching. Lower density for keywords should be used for better ease of reading.

Density should always be kept close to 2% for any chosen words. If one keyword is chosen, adhere to the 2% limit, and limit synonyms. Synonyms should be monitored to avoid exceeding a recommended density.

It is often recommended to place at least 100 words between keywords. This 100 word distance is recommended for the primary keyword used. This reduces the cluttered feeling that text gets with high density.

Just as density is important, so are the words in the articles. Hype should be avoided when creating original content for websites. Instead of making promises, use facts when talking about services.

Answer Questions In Articles Before They Are Asked

For effective copywriting, articles should anticipate questions. These questions include answering "how" and "why" for the readers. These questions may be posed in the headlines to draw attention.

If the titles can catch their attention, they are likely to read on. Once the reader's attention has been obtained, it must be kept. This is accomplished by answering those anticipated questions.

Answering questions can help viewers to understand the site better. This may include explaining services and how it can benefit them. This is one of the professional copywriter uses for good quality web copywriting.
